BY KATHRYN JONES llisDon Corp., one of the largest and most respected general contractors in Canada, has been working on a number of sports arena projects this year, including a highly unique hockey arena in Oakville, Ontario, that will feature four ice rinks. Construction on the $40 million design/build project began in January 2009 and is slated to be completed in May 2010. The North Park Quad Pad Arena encompasses 18,500 square meters and stands 9 meters tall at its highest point. It will be utilized by the town of Oakville – the owner – for recreational purposes and as a venue for junior hockey team the Oakville Blades. EllisDon has built other sports venues for this client, including the recently completed Pine Glen Soccer Centre. According to Project Manager Anthony Bisanti, the North Park Quad Pad Arena “is not your standard type of hockey arena.” Its unique features and polished finishes set it apart from others in Canada, he explains. For instance, the arena will have its own full-service restaurant and six change rooms per rink for a total of 24, which is a lot more than usual, he says. In addition, it was designed to achieve LEED silver certification, which is uncommon for sports venues. The project utilizes a TPO membrane, which is a LEED-certified roof system; bioswales for site drainage; and clerestory windows that provide natural sunlight, while not affecting the quality or finish of the ice surface. “It is certainly going to be showpiece, something that any person involved would be happy to be a part of,” Bisanti says. Unique Structure The highlight of the project – the four ice rinks – vary in size and purpose. Rink 1 will be an Olympic-sized arena with 1,500 spectator seats and is the only one with a heating feature. Rinks 2 through 4 are National Hockey League (NHL) ice rinks and will be used for numerous activities, such as figure skating and sledge CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM DECEMBER 2009 http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
