Institutional | SHIEL SEXTON – BUTLER UNIVERSITY A Greener Home Setting the Stage Some of the school’s green features include waterless urinals in the men’s room and hand dryers rather than paper towels in all restrooms. Bicycle storage, changing rooms and showers will be available for people who ride their bikes to work. In addition, 5 percent of the building’s parking lot is reserved for hybrid vehicles. Construction waste materials were also recycled and used for carpet and flooring throughout the building. The classrooms will have a combination of natural light and soft electric lights. Green electricity will be purchased through a program with Indianapolis Power & Light, according to Butler. In addition, some of the heat that comes from the university’s data center – which is being moved to the new addition – will be used to heat the building. “It is the university’s priority to become a more green campus,” Butler explains. “This addition will set the stage for all construction projects going forward.” L SHIEL SEXTON WORKED ON BUTLER UNIVERSITY’S PHARMACY AND HEALTH SCIENCES BUILDING, THE FIRST LEED FACILITY ON CAMPUS. EED construction is increasingly popular on college campuses. In August, Butler University (BU) completed its first LEED building on campus, becoming one of the two LEED silver-certified facilities on university grounds in Indianapolis. The $14.5 million pharmacy and health sciences building will allow Butler’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to recruit more pharmacy faculty and accept more transfer students. Part of the project’s funding came from a grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc., an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation. “We have six objectives for the grant, one of which is to become an employer of choice among pharmacy faculty,” Mary Andritz, dean of the college of pharmacy and health sciences, said in a statement. “One of the ways you do that is to have a good infrastructure – buildings, classrooms, laboratories and offices that allow instructors to be successful in the classroom and their scholarship.” Indianapolis-based Shiel Sexton once again worked with BU to complete this project. The duo has worked on more than eight major projects over the years. Senior Project Manager Mike Green spoke with Construction Today about the project’s background, distinguishing factor and keys to success.
