Cedar Ridge High School will have room for 2,400 students once completed. « Institutional | CEDAR RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL Academy Driven Design T THE NEW CEDAR RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL WILL FEATURE A MODERN EDUCATIONAL METHOD. BY LIBBY JOHN he new Cedar Ridge High School will be different from Round Rock School District’s four other high schools because it will incorporate a unique learning style, says Alan Albers, executive director of facilities for the Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD). “It’s the district’s first academy-driven school designed and built from the ground up,” he says. “It will focus on career direction and prepare students for post-high school learning.” The school – located in Round Rock, Texas, and expected to be completed in July 2010 – will be 375,000 square feet with capacity for 2,400 students. The facility will include classrooms, a cafeteria, a library, two sports gymnasiums, one smaller dance gym – football, baseball and softball fields and 1,185 parking spaces for students and staff. The full cost of the project including furniture, equipment and computers is $97.8 million, and construction began in May 2008. As of October, the project is over halfway completed with the mechanical systems, ductwork and interior walls being installed, Albers says. The school is composed of a ninth-grade center and three academy wings that will focus on different career paths. The Human Services/Safety, Security and Law Academy wing will focus on hospitality and public service, tourism, culinary, and education; the STEM Academy will cover science, technology, engineering and math including the construction trades; and the Business, Finance and Marketing Academy wing will focus on arts, humanities and communications and the various strands of business and accounting. Starting their sophomore year, students can choose which path they would like to focus on, but can change if desired, Albers says.
