Commercial | LEDCOR – NAPA DIVISION Aging Like a Fine Wine LEDCOR’S NAPA DIVISION PUTS THE FINAL TOUCHES ON A MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT. BY KELLY MCCABE s “the most experienced winery group in California,” Ledcor’s Napa division – in the heart of California wine country – attracts wine and hospitality clients with its ability to stay on time and on budget. And in Napa, the wine business is a booming one – it generates more than $9 billion in annual economic activity. Ledcor Napa has become the leading winery construction company in the region by being transparent with clients. “We operate on an open-book format where we allow the customer to see all the costs of the project,” Director of Business Development Jeff Baptista says. Completing roughly 10 projects a year, Ledcor Napa’s portfolio includes work ranging from $1 million to $50 million, mostly in Napa, Sonoma and Marin counties. The division’s hospitality projects include the four-star Westin Verasa Napa, the Meritage Resort and the Poetry Inn. Winery projects completed by Ledcor’s Napa division include the Cliff Lede Vineyards, Staglin Family Winery and the Benovia Winery. Winery construction includes unique aspects, including tanks, barrels, hose stations, refrigeration systems and all-washable surfaces. “They also include a hospitality section where people taste wine, so that section is kind of a retail environment with high-end finishes,” Baptista explains. World-Class Wine With a history dating back to the early 1800s, Napa Valley is one of California’s top winegrowing regions. By the end of that century, Napa had more than 140 wineries, including still-popular brands such as Beringer, Charles Krug, Chateau Montelena and Shramsburg. The area suffered setbacks with the onset of Prohibition in 1920 and an infestation of a root louse that killed many of Napa’s vines. Post-World War II, Napa Valley again was thriving and received an extra boost when wine giant Robert Mondavi left his family’s Charles Krug vineyard to start his own. Today, Napa Valley’s more than 300 wineries attract approximately 5 million visitors each year. Other winery construction by Ledcor’s Napa division include: • Futo Winery • Carneros Winery • Cuvaison • Larkmead Vineyards • Nickel and Nickel Winery Improving with Age Since 1999, more than $462 million has been invested in private and public development projects in Napa, making it an exciting time to be a contractor in the region. The city has been undergoing an economic transformation – welcoming retailers such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Talbot’s – and its dining scene is booming, with approximately 20 wine bars and tasting rooms opening in recent years.
