President and CEO John G. Novak founded the company in 1980 as an interiorcontracting firm with only two employees. Today, Novak Construction employs a staff of 60 and 80 percent of the company’s work is for repeat clients, including such retailers as Target, Costco Wholesale Corp. and Whole Foods Market IP L.P. Rustman says the company has nurtured this loyal base with its “attitude of trying to take care of the clients. “Clients’ wishes are No. 1,” he declares. “We’re not about one job [with a client]; we’re about the next job and many jobs down the road.” construction management »Novak Construction Co. provides preconstruction, general contracting andWhole Foods and Target. services to a number of well-known national clients in the retail sector, including Reaching the Clients’ Objectives Novak Construction’s specialties include preconstruction services, which it provides to many of its clients, it says. “There are numerous advantages to bringing the general contractor into the design and development phase of a project – both for the owner and the architect,” the company notes. For instance, “Cost-effective alternatives and other value-added engineering ideas can best be discussed and explored during the preconstruction process to help accomplish the objectives of the owner,” Novak Construction explains. Another area where the company strongly shows its client focus is in its general contracting services. In these, “We work as a team with the owner, architect and engineer to bring [a client’s] project in on time and within budget,” the company says. OCTOBER 2009 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
