Commercial | PENNSY SUPPLY Pennsy Stays No.1 H arrisburg, Pa.-based Pennsy Supply has been in business since 1926. With an established background in providing aggregate, asphalt and concrete to the construction industry – as well as providing construction services in the commercial, infrastructure development and residential building sectors in south-central Pennsylvania – Pennsy has grown to become an industry leader. But this status can’t insulate it completely from the recession. To cope, it has embraced a variety of civil work made available by the government stimulus package – to the tune of $30 million. It also has developed a new line of ready-mix concrete – a unique formula its customers appreciate, General Manager Barry Duffy says. In addition to adding a new plant to its Prescott, Pa., location, Pennsy has worked with its customers to create branded ready-mixes that are specific to customers’ needs. PENNSY SUPPLY IS STAYING AHEAD OF COMPETITORS BY CONTINUING TO INNOVATE. BY GENEVIEVE DIESING To date, the company has developed eight high-quality branded mixes, and it plans on continuing to innovate as it grows. It continues to secure more large contract projects than ever before, it says, such as highway projects, which increase in amount for Pennsy each year. Pennsy Supply explains it is also focusing its efforts on providing inhouse technical training classes and partnering with vendors on an ongoing basis. The company is a subsidiary of Oldcastle Materials Inc., a vertically integrated supplier of aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix concrete and paving services in the United States and is one of four divisions of CRH plc, the international building materials group. In a recent interview with Construction Today, Duffy explained the advantages of having a well-established organization capable of reinvesting capital back into its business. “We’re No. 1 in customer service; our people make it happen.” –Barry Duffy, general manager www.pennsysupply.com • HQ: Harrisburg, Pa. • Employees: 650 • Products and services: Aggrega te, asphalt, concrete and construction services Pennsy Supply Pennsy has more than $30 million in work from the federal stimulus package. product offerings « »Pennsy’seight high-quality include branded mixes.
