Institutional | KREIZENBECK CONSTRUCTORS – BSU STUDENT UNION Old School Work KREIZENBECK COMPLETED A REMODEL AND EXPANSION FOR BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY. BY KATHRYN JONES oise, Idaho-based Kreizenbeck Constructors separates itself from the competition by bringing a professional management strategy to all phases of a project. “We provide communication and coordination during the entire project process from preliminary design to final project close-out,” the company says, adding that it is capable of performing general contracting, construction management or design/build services. “With knowledge of the owners’ goals, we continually implement innovative solutions to carefully balance time, quality and cost throughout all phases of the design and construction.” Founded in 1982, Kreizenbeck strives to establish long-term building partnerships with clients that will ultimately lead to repeat business and a reputation for quality. The company hopes its recent work on the $31 million Student Union remodel and expansion project at Boise State University (BSU) has prompted a lasting relationship with the institution and the state of Idaho Division of Public Works. Second Helpings The project – which began in June 2007 and was completed in August 2009 – remodeled more than 100,000 square feet of existing space of BSU’s 180,000-square-foot Student Union. Kreizenbeck, acting as construction manager, divided the phased project into nine milestones, one of which was a 67,000-squarefoot addition to the 50-year-old building. “What the expansion brought was a major improvement to the university’s foodservice capabilities, and we expanded meeting space, as well as lounge and office space,” Project Manager Graham Estep says. The project entailed relocating the Boise River Café – the primary eatery for students on campus – to a larger space, which resulted in “a major improvement to what they could offer and the amount of people they could serve,” according to Estep. In addition, the company added a large ballroom to the facility, which now serves as the university’s grand marquee ballroom. the »Kreizenbeck remodeled State Student Union at Boise University in Idaho. Having a ‘Bowl’ The project entailed remodeling BSU’s campus identification and new-student information departments, administrative areas, as well as its convenience store and bookstore. “The expansion allowed them to almost double the square footage of their existing bookstore and provide additional retail space for the Bronco Shop,” Estep says. To the students’ delight, the Student Union Game Center also received a facelift. The existing space had six bowling lanes, and crews www.kreizenbeck.com • Budget: $31 million • Location: Boise, Idaho • Scope: 167,000-square-foot rem odel and expansion • Peak employees: 100 Kreizenbeck Constructors “We like to take the project on and make it our own.” –Graham Estep, project manager CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM OCTOBER 2009
