BY GENEVIEVE DIESING he University of Lethbridge in southern Alberta is incorporating a new facility that will provide capacity for 450 students in health sciences and management studies programs and will provide specialized instructional spaces, office and research space. Dubbed Markin Hall, it will house the university’s Centres of Research Excellence, including the Centre for Health Management Research and the Centre for Socially Responsible Marketing, and will provide room for the growth of the International Program, the Management Development Centre and the Career Enhancement Centre. The $65 million hall will benefit both the university and Alberta, the university says. The university placed the management of the construction process of such a notable job in the hands of Stuart Olson Constructors – a contractor whom the University of Lethbridge has trusted with several of its projects. Working as a Team As the construction manager for the project, Stuart Olson began working on the job in February 2008, and expects to be completed in May 2010. Construction on the four-level, 100,000-square-foot, LEED-silver building is going smoothly, Project Manager Bill Scales says. He says this is due in part to the team’s ability to work together and resolve issues quickly. Brian Sullivan, director of major construction projects at the university, agrees. “We’ve worked as a team on the whole project and we review issues and problems and challenges almost on a daily basis,” he says. “We’re doing great – a little ahead of schedule – and we are looking very good for a strong completion.” Sullivan says teamwork has been key on this project, and Scales says that much of this has to do with the top-notch subcontractors on the job. “We’ve had great success with trades so far,” he says. “I’m proud of our relationships CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM OCTOBER 2009
