T H- CEN T AL SOU THE LEMOINE COMPANY WORKS ON ITS THIRD MAJOR PROJECT AT A LOUISIANA HOSPITAL. BY JIM HARRIS R Institutional | THE LEMOINE COMPANY– LAFAYETTE GENERAL MEDICAL CENTER EXPANSION Three-Peat Business FO CUS The Lemoine Company recently broke ground on a hospital expansion project. L afayette General Medical Center (LGMC) administrators had an easy choice when it came to deciding the general contractor for the hospital’s latest expansion project. “It was easy to move forward with The Lemoine Company because they were successful in our previous two projects,” says Marie Lukaszeski, a project manager and interior designer representing the Lafayette, La.-based healthcare facility. “Lemoine knows the ins and outs of our hospital, we are familiar with their processes, and they are familiar with ours in terms of patient safety and infection control. We had a successful relationship with them and wanted to keep that going.” In October 2012, The Lemoine Company broke ground on a $52.5 million expansion to the medical center’s emergency and surgical department. Project completion is anticipated in fall 2014. This is the third project The Lemoine Company has performed there since 2009, when it completed a $26 million pavilion serving women and children and renovated the hospital’s main lobby and entrance. The company in 2011 completed a $70 million renovation to the interior and exterior of the hospital’s 10-story main tower. 122 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 “We didn’t see the need to go elsewhere and seek an alternative contractor,” Lukaszeski says. “The Lemoine Company has been a true partner to us throughout the design and construction process.” The Lemoine Company has taken an active role in planning the project, as it has worked in conjunction with LGMC and architects Washer Hill Lipscomb Cabaniss since its inception and helped establish its budget. “We went into construction with a solid game plan,” says Wills Hover, project manager with The Lemoine Company. “We like to think of ourselves as healthcare specialists, and our last few projects at LGMC have given us an opportunity to fine tune what we’re doing on this project.” Established in 1975, The Lemoine Company is a general contracting and construction management firm serving the institutional, commercial and industrial sectors. The company is headquartered in Lafayette and has full service offices in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La. Meeting Modern Needs The need for an upgraded emergency and surgical department at LGMC became clear during the tower renovation project. “We’ve seen « The Lemoine Company– Lafayette General Medical Center expansion • Project cost: $52.5 million • Location: Lafayette, La. • Employees on site at peak: 200 • Scope of work: Medical facility expansion a vast increase in the need for emergency services, and made a commitment to our physicians and surgeons that we would do something to update the way in which we provide surgical services to our community,” says Lukaszeski, noting the hospital was initially built in the 1960s. “We needed to design and build a new surgical platform and expand our emergency department to meet the growing needs of our community.” LGMC’s emergency department sees roughly 60,000 patients annually and is one of the five busiest emergency departments in http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
