BY DEBORAH SWEENEY GETTING READY TO LAUNCH I n 2011, it was reported in the Wall Street Journal that new entrepreneurs entering the construction industry accounted for 24 percent of all U.S. entrepreneurial activity, despite overall business creation having dropped that year by 6 percent. Though the housing bubble may have collapsed, entrepreneurs are experiencing success stories by creating construction startups that cater to the needs of home additions, remodeling and alterations, all three of which are currently in demand for homeowners. For out-of-work construction workers who lost their jobs when the housing bubble burst, this is a great opportunity to pick it all up and start fresh while still doing what they love and are skilled at in the process. But before launching the startup, there are several documents that entrepre- neurs need in order to start their new business properly and protect their assets in the process. 1) A Written Business Plan Before doing anything else, your startup will require a written business plan with an executive summary, business description, market analysis, implementation strategies, web plan (for the online side of your business if you should require any), management plan and financial analysis in place.
