Civil | GRAHAM CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING – WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT UPGRADE Steady Flow A t Graham Construction and Engineering, the company’s vision is to be North America’s premier integrated construction solutions partner, Senior Project Manager Troy Gaudet explains. This level of focus is perfect for the company’s current project in Cornwall, Ontario, which has its share of complexities. Gaudet explains that Graham Construction is building a $44 million expansion to an existing wastewater treatment plant and pumping station in Cornwall. It will allow the city to accommodate its expanding population while maintaining the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Environment. These upgrades will include new inlet screening and degritting facilities, an ultraviolet disinfection system, a standby power system, electrical distribution systems, plant automation, a new secondary treatment process implementing biological aerated filter (BAF) technology and upgrades to the existing pumping station. Working on this project year-round, Graham Construction has organized its schedule according to the seasons. « GRAHAM WORKS EFFICIENTLY AS IT UPGRADES A WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN ONTARIO. BY ALAN DORICH located and excavation started early in May 2012. The project has a targeted completion date set for April 26, 2014. The project team will face many challenges on this project, with the most significant challenge being the construction of the BAF facility. The team must factor the required biological performance of the system at start-up into the timing of the BAF facility completion, since warmer ambient temperatures are needed during start-up to initiate the necessary biological reactions that occur with higher effluent temperatures. This means that the construction of the BAF facility will be expedited so that it is ready for startup in the early fall of 2013, rather than during the winter of 2014. Building With Pride The contract was awarded near the end of the first quarter in 2012, resulting in the project starting at a favorable time in the construction season in April. As is typical on many projects, the initial project stages involved detailed construction planning, procurement, site mobilization and the arrival of the heavy civil earthworks equipment.
