BY ERIC SLACK n 2013, Bombardier Learjet will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Learjet flight and the birth of the business jet industry in 1963. As part of Bombardier Learjet’s strategic plan, the company is aiming to continue to carve out a leading role in the business jet industry in terms of style, performance and technological innovation. This is why the company is investing in a significant expansion project that is currently well underway at its Wichita, Kan., site. The original Learjet 23 first took to the skies on Oct. 7, 1963. Bombardier Aerospace purchased Learjet nearly three decades later in 1990. Today, Bombardier is a Canada-based global leader in a multitude of transportation solutions. The industry giant specializes in everything from commercial aircraft and business jets to rail transportation equipment, systems and services. The Sky is the Limit I Bombardier Learjet – Facility Expansion • Project cost: $52.7 million • Location: Wichita, Kan. • Scope: New facilities and parking lots at Bombardier Learjet’s Wichita site “This project will give us additional capacity to support our newest model.” -Heath Koehler, manager of facilities maintenance and plant engineering Taking Off In April, Bombardier Learjet held a groundbreaking ceremony that kicked off the expansion of Wichita's Learjet site, which is located adjacent to the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. The company says this project will be the largest expansion effort ever undertaken during Bombardier Learjet's history. Some of the external partners Bombardier Learjet is currently working with on the expansion project include Howard and Helmer Architecture, Professional Engineering Consultants, Dudley Williams and Associates for structural design and Conco Construction as the general contractor. There are many facets to the expansion project, which the company says is necessary to accommodate the new Learjet 85 midsize jet and its scheduled entry into service in 2013.
