BY ERIC SLACK A Star is Born • Project cost: $42 million • Location: Shawnee Mission • Employees onsite at peak: , Kan. 12 • Scope: Four-story birth cen 5 ter addition Institutional | SHAWNEE MISSION MEDICAL CENTER – UNITED EXCEL – BIRTH CENTER PROJECT Shawnee Mission Medical Center – United Excel – Birth Center Project www. art of the Adventist Health System, Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is a renowned 504bed hospital near Kansas City, Kan. It serves 20,000 inpatients and 200,000 outpatients annually and has the busiest emergency department in Johnson County, Kan., the area’s first accredited chest pain center and delivers the most babies in Kansas City. That last fact is the reason for the medical center’s ongoing expansion project. The addition to the medical center is designed to support its birth center, which delivers almost 4,000 babies each year. “That department is currently bursting at the seams and housed in the oldest part of the hospital,” says Bruce Murphy, administrative director of facilities and construction at SMMC. “This addition will give the maternity department a new identity.” Located on a 54-acre site, SMMC’s campus includes a freestanding outpatient surgery center, a community health education building, six physician office buildings and an associate child care center. It employs more than 2,800 associates and has the largest medical staff in Kansas City. The general contractor on the project is United Excel. Founded in 1994, United Excel specializes in the design/build of healthcare facilities. Headquartered in Merriam, Kan., United Excel is currently completing renovations, repairs and the new construction of medical facilities across the country. Center of Progress The addition to Shawnee Mission Medical Center is a $42 million birth center that will revolutionize the organization’s already strong maternity programs. The project broke ground in mid-2011 and is slated to open in early 2013. The four-story tower will include labor and delivery rooms, private postpartum rooms and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. “The environment is designed to be calming and comforting, feeling more like a spa then a birthing center,” Murphy says. “We’ve done a lot to enhance comfort, with fireplaces in waiting rooms, natural stone inside the building and floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize natural light.” NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM 103 http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
