Wright Construction Co. • Project cost: $42.8 million • Headquarters: Scottsdale, Ariz. • Scope: Equestrian center expansion Howard S. Wright – Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center Making Horse Sense AN EQUESTRIAN CENTER EXPANSION WILL DRAW MORE EVENTS AND REVENUE FOR SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. A major attraction in Scottsdale, Ariz., is in the process of receiving an upgrade that will ultimately help it draw even larger crowds and events. Construction manager Howard S. Wright Construction Co. in April 2012 started work on the expansion of the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center at WestWorld, a special event facility owned and operated by the city. The $42.8 million project will renovate, expand and enclose the center’s Equidome, an existing open-air facility. This will allow the center to host events year-round. WestWorld hosts more than 70 equestrian events annually attended by more than 220,000 people, equaling more than 247 days of use. The project will add 40,000 square feet to the facility, bringing its total area to more than 300,000 square feet. In addition to hosting equestrian competitions and shows, the enclosed and expanded Equidome will also serve as a permanent space for a collector car auction currently hosted in a temporary tent. The project, which is expected to be completed toward the end of 2013, is being built in two phases in order for the facility to remain open during construction. “Producers of many new equestrian shows have expressed strong interest in coming to WestWorld if a larger, climate-controlled arena was available,” the city of Scottsdale says. ”In addition, producers for some of the current shows would like to add new shows and possibly expand the number days of their existing shows when a larger, enclosed WestWorld arena becomes available. The expansion will make this possible.” An expanded center is expected to be a financial boon for the city, as the addition and expansion of shows will have a direct positive impact SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM 35 http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
