Civil | URS CORP./ALBERICI CONSTRUCTORS INC. – OLMSTED DAM PROJECT Side by Side W 98 hen it comes to water construction, Alberici Constructors is a contractor with extensive experience. The St. Louis-based firm has completed some of the largest water and wastewater treatment projects in North America. “We provide unflinching dependability to our clients by placing highly qualified construction professionals on every project,” the company states. The firm now brings that skill to the Olmsted Dam project, its latest job for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). According to Alberici Senior Project Manager Jim Beckerle, the $1.1 billion project consists of the construction of a new dam on the Ohio River in Olmsted, Ill. This will replace locks and dams 52 and 53 on the river and will add a dam comprised of five 110-foot tainter gates and a navigable pass section with 1,400 feet of boat-operated wicket gates. In the role of general contractor, Alberici has formed a joint venture with Washington Group International, a division of URS Corp. Beckerle notes that the area has needed the new lock for a long time. “The two that it is replacing were built in the late ‘20s,” he says, noting that the new one will be more efficient.
