Harbor Shores says Powell’s craftsmanship led it to choose the builder for Hideaway Cottages. « Residential | POWELL CONSTRUCTION SERVICES LLC Building Above Par A POWELL EARNS A PRIME ROLE ON A LARGE GOLF AND RESIDENTIAL RESORT COMMUNITY. BY JIM HARRIS key role in one of southwest Michigan’s largest new residential developments is expected to be a catalyst for growth for an area homebuilder. Powell Construction Services LLC started work on Hideaway Cottages in 2010. The neighborhood is located within Harbor Shores, a 530-acre golf resort and residential community now under development in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Benton Township, Mich. The company is now building the 14th and 15th of an expected 58 cottages, and expects to continue work there for the next five to six years, company owner Greg Powell says. For Powell, the security of being the exclusive homebuilder on the neighborhood is an indicator of a bright future for the company after the sharp decline in homebuilding activity nationwide starting in 2007. “Our market is beginning to improve and we’re seeing more people working and more activity around town,” says Powell, who founded the company in 1997. “Our phones are ringing more with calls from people looking to build or remodel homes.” In addition to the Hideaway Cottages work, Powell Construction is seeing a greater demand for its remodeling services. The company started to focus on remodeling following the decline in the new housing market. In addition to general remodeling, Powell also performs kitchen, bath and basement projects. “We have about four remodeling jobs currently and are starting several kitchen and bath projects, but we’re always looking for more work,” he adds. Powell Construction offers design services for new and remodeled homes and operates a design center where a staff designer works with clients on interior and exterior finishes selections. Hideaway Cottages is the second development for which Powell has served as an exclusive homebuilder. A couple years ago, the company finished work on 61 single-family homes Powell Construction Services LLC • Revenues: $4.5 million • Headquarters: St. Joseph, Mich. • Employees: 11 • Specialty: Residential construction “We believe the homebuilding process should be fun for everybody involved.” –Greg Powell, president on Island Pointe Marina in Saint Joseph, Mich., a waterfront community.
