BEST PRACTICES CORPORATE DRIVER C Your corporate culture can be the guiding force within your firm’s marketplace. BY GERRI KNILANS orporate culture is the heartbeat of an organization and the driver of the entity’s mission, performance and ethics. It is the foundation of values, beliefs, actions and behaviors. While the concept may seem abstract and more appropriate to business school classes, it is quite real and needs to be an everyday consideration in the life of every company. There are many ways to look at how corporate culture is manifested. For example, companies can assess how the business is regarded in the marketplace. What is its reputation? What is the rate of repeat business? What do customer satisfaction surveys indicate? Additionally, companies can look at how staff communicates with one another, how facilities are maintained, how work is performed and how challenges are addressed to see if words and deeds are in sync. These are crucial indicators that tell companies when their intent is consistent with reality. Creating a Culture “Organizational Culture in U.S. Construction Companies,” a paper published by scholars from the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Cincinnati, finds the “dynamics of the construction business have become more dependent than ever on the cultural characteristics of construction companies.” It’s hard to argue with that supposition. A company’s culture guides every action taken in its name, and the marketplace knows it. Creating the culture, however, is another matter. For many organizations, it starts from the top down with a vision generally established by founders and senior executives who expect it to flourish through the commitment of every associate. Yet, as many executives have discovered, corporate culture cannot be a one-way street. Employees and other stakeholders have more than a passing interest in it, and their feedback should not be ignored. 16 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2011 http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
