amily businesses can be difficult
to maintain - familiarity breeds
contempt, as the saying goes. But
when families work together well,
businesses can thrive, and that is the case
with Hard Rock Sawing & Drilling Specialists Co. The company's familial culture has
helped it attract skilled workers who maintain their tenure with the business for the
long term, which is key for any company in
the construction industry.
"[Owner] Mary Dvoratchek is very
understanding with people," says Mike
Hobolich, who performs sales, estimating
and other functions for the company, and
is Dvoratchek's son. "She believes family
comes first and the job comes second, and
as a result, she treats everybody really well."

ing and wire sawing. The company serves
the Midwest from its headquarters and
offices in Elkhorn, Madison and Eau Claire,
Wis., and Dubuque, Iowa, but it is willing to
travel to meet clients' needs, and has worked
on projects in Arkansas, Florida and Georgia.
Hobolich explains Hard Rock used to be
part of another company, where Mary and
Larry Dvoratchek worked on a number of
DOT projects. Eventually, the opportunity
came around for Mary to purchase the Wisconsin branch of the company, and she did.
Mary Dvoratchek is president and owner
of the company, which is a Native American-owned and operated business. Larry
Dvoratchek continues to work with Mary as
the company's vice president.

we have two different father-son combinations who work with us," Hobolich says. "We
