Retail Developers A Powerhouse Returns There are many factors contributing to Ontario’s reputation as the economic powerhouse of Canada, including skilled workers and a pro-business climate. The province also boasts the nation’s largest metropolitan area – the greater Toronto region – as well as a gross domestic product larger than the European nations of Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and Ireland, and the offices and large production facilities of many of the world’s largest automotive, biotech, chemical, aerospace and financial services companies. One of the most visible signs of the province’s economic health can be seen in its retail and commercial development. Ontario, much like the rest of the world, is seeing a return of new retail development projects as it continues to recover from the effects of the global recession that started in 2008. According to the 2010 Ontario Progress Report – published by the provincial government – retail sales in Ontario reported a 5.5 percent increase in 2010 from 2009 figures, and the Conference Board of Canada reported that consumer confidence rose 7.1 percent in January 2011 to 88.1 points, the highest level since early 2010.
