Residential | RELIABLE BUILDERS INC. Exponential Growth R RELIABLE BUILDERS HAS GROWN IN BOTH SIZE AND SERVICE OFFERINGS IN GUAM. BY BARBARA MCHATTON eliable Builders Inc. (RBI) was established in 1977 by Jong K. Kim, CEO and president, to rebuild residential homes in Guam after the island was ravaged by Super Typhoon Pamela in 1976. Beginning with one backhoe, one truck and two employees, the firm completed nearly 65 homes within its first seven years in operation. Spurred by a burgeoning construction market in the mid-1980s, the company expanded its project scope to include commercial projects such as hotels, multifamily residences and business facilities. By 1991, RBI began competitively bidding on military projects for both the U.S. Navy and Air Force installations on Guam. RBI has also been involved with infrastructure projects, such as port operations projects including dredging works, pile driving and rock revetment; and civil projects such as road construction, bridge repairs and erosion control. “RBI completed several projects for the U.S. military including the Guam Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic at Naval Hospital and the postal service project at Andersen Air Force GUAM FO CUS Base, which is currently underway,” says Philsan Kim,vice president and the founder’s son. In May 2009, RBI received the contract to repair and modernize Bachelor Quarters Buildings 580, 581 and 584 at Camp Covington Naval Base. Funded by the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, the project involved installing new doors, windows, ceramic tile, appliances, kitchen cabinets and plumbing faucets and fixtures, as well as cooling systems. In addition, the work included replacement of drywall, repainting and other cosmetic improvements. “This ongoing work provides for repair and alteration of the enlisted quarters to improve the quality of life and safety for personnel who return to Guam after serving in active duty,” Kim says. Also committed to helping the people of Guam, RBI recently completed phases I and II of the Sagan Bonita project in Mangilao.
