Civil | MCKINNEY DRILLING CO. Thrill of the Drill MCKINNEY’S RELATIONSHIPS, RELIABILITY AND REPUTATION HELP IT BE THE LEADER IN DRILLED SHAFT FOUNDATIONS. BY KATHRYN JONES T he best landmarks in the world are those that can withstand the test of time, but the only way to build an enduring structure is to have a solid foundation. A solid foundation requires the expertise of a solid contractor that is unmatched in the industry with regard to quality, professionalism and experience. McKinney Drilling Co. has provided clients with quality foundation services for more than 75 years. It has risen through the ranks to become the leading drilled shaft foundation contractor in North America. With a reputation for being the most efficient, safety oriented and technically advanced, one might say the Odenton, Md.-based company has laid the foundation for the rest of its industry. McKinney Drilling was founded in 1937 by the late Jack and Richard McKinney. In search of a way to expedite the foundations of bridges they were constructing, the brothers began experimenting with small earth-boring pieces of equipment in the late 1930s to construct drilled and belled pier foundations. Ever since, McKinney’s history has been peppered with industry innovations and major milestones such as completing the North River Pollution Control Project in New York’s Hudson River in 1978, the largest foundation project in the world at the time, and Section II of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. With more than 100 drilling rigs, McKinney maintains one of the largest fleets of foundation drilling equipment in the world that enable it to perform drilled shafts, auger cast piles, driven piles and low clearance work. Exploring New Avenues In 2002, McKinney was acquired by Keller, an international ground-engineering specialist based in London.
