Civil | TURNER CONSTRUCTION CO. – MIC RENTAL CAR CENTER For the Long Haul T he Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is developing a massive transportation hub adjacent to the Miami International Airport (MIA) to the benefit of area residents and visitors. The $1.7 billion Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) Program will provide connectivity between all forms of ground transportation available in Miami-Dade County, while decongesting the streets surrounding the bustling airport, according to FDOT Program Manager Gary Donn. Throughout the decades, Miami-Dade County has blossomed into a sprawling metropolis, placing serious constraints on its transportation infrastructure, specifically the airport’s surrounding highways. Preliminary strategies to decongest the roadways began in the 1980s, when the Miami International Airport Area Transportation Study recommended the implementation of a multimodal transportation access facility that could serve as a link between the city’s commuter rail and bus services. TURNER BUILDS THE MIAMI INTERMODAL CENTER, INCLUDING A RENTAL CAR FACILITY. BY KATHRYN JONES Fun Fact FDOT’s Plan As Miami boomed in the early 1990s, the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 was passed to maintain and expand the nation’s transportation infrastructure. Potential federal investments prompted county officials to undertake efforts to link the Tri-Rail and Metrorail systems, while improving roadway access to the airport. In 1993, FDOT established the MIC Program – which entailed the construction of the Rental Car Center (RCC), the Central Station and an automated people mover, known as the MIA Mover, as well as roadway improvements – and began a nearly 10-year capital campaign to finance the colossal project. Work on the first Although consolidated rental car facilities are popping up across the nation as a common method of reducing airport congestion, the Rental Car Center at Miami Intermodal Center will be the only facility in the United States with multi-level fueling and car washing capabilities. “What separates this from other rental car facilities is that we have fueling on each level,” Donn notes. “This building has four levels. The top level is where the lobby is and some additional parking areas, but the bottom levels are where the car companies will be, as well as the washbasin and fueling stations.” • Budget: $330 million • Location: Miami • Peak employees: 750 • Scope: 3.4 million-square-foot consolidated rental car facility Turne Const MIC rRentalructionCenter– Car Co. “We have excellent relationships with the subcontractors on this project.” –Carlos Casal, project executive »The Miami Intermodal Center project includes the MIA Mover, an automated people mover system to shuttle travelers between the airport facilities. 76 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM JANUARY 2010 http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
