HAS BUILT PROJECTS FROM ROLLER COASTERS TO TREATMENT PLANTS. elebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Wharton-Smith Inc. (WSI) was founded in central Florida in 1984 by George Smith and Bill Wharton. The two men “envisioned growing a company that would encompass strong work ethics and have a positive impact within the communities that we serve,” the company says. Besides its Sanford, Fla., headquarters in central Florida, WSI has additional offices in Tampa, Palm City, Fla., Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C. “Each project that we undertake is treated distinctly and is matched with the most experienced and qualified team possible,” the company emphasizes. Among its current projects is the $50 million, 80,000-square-foot Sanford Public Safety Complex. Its three floors include an exterior Civic Plaza onto which a community meeting room opens, a five-bay fire station, the fire department’s administrative offices, an emergency operations center and the police department. The police and fire departments are separate facilities that share a three-story atrium, which includes a reception area and a historic fire apparatus display. The complex is located southwest of Sanford’s historic downtown between the Goldsboro community and the state farmers market. Its exterior walls will be concrete tilt wall construction with glazing that is designed to withstand 150 mph hurricane-force winds. All mechanical and electrical systems are backed up 100 percent, Wharton-Smith says. The Civic Plaza is framed by the threestory atrium to the east and the two-story fire department to the south. The plaza will contain existing oak trees, new planters and trees, public art and seating areas to create a civic space. The project was started in July 2009 and is scheduled for completion by September 2010. Already constructed are foundations, slabs and storm drainage systems. The building’s shell is expected to be completed by May 2010. has built »Wharton-Smithfor theme roller coasters parks in central Florida. Another recent project by WSI is the Center for Public Safety at Seminole State College (formerly Seminole Community College). High-tech classroom space will allow SCC’s public service programs to expand. Existing space in two buildings was completely renovated, and a new administrative wing was built to connect the buildings. The project is located at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus of Seminole State College. Other higher education clients include the University of Central Florida and Rollins College. Additional market segments WSI serves are environmental, commercial, international, entertainment, healthcare and green building construction.
