»Strathcona Mechanical Ltd. has completed work for water parks in the past. Commercial | STRATHCONA MECHANICAL LTD. 60 Years of Experience I STRATHCONA MECHANICAL LTD. IS KNOWN THROUGHOUT ALBERTA FOR ITS MECHANICAL EXPERTISE. n 1982, Strathcona Mechanical Ltd. (SML) emerged as part of an amalgamation with Fuller & Knowles Ltd., a well-known mechanical contractor. Fuller & Knowles had been serving the industry since 1946. This merger enabled the newly formed Strathcona Mechanical Limited to continue to provide professional work within the construction industry that combines extensive industry experience and knowledge with new technologies and state-of-the-art construction methods. Strathcona Mechanical has worked on schools, hospitals, hotels, recreation centers, and institutional, educational and government work. It has completed projects throughout western Canada, Labrador, the Northwest and Yukon Territories, northern Saskatchewan, and in the last few years, mostly in Alberta and British Columbia. “Our goal is to provide cost-efficient, quality workmanship adhering to the standards of the industry,” the company says. “Our team of experts from pre-planning to warranty management ensures that each project is handled with professionalism and satisfaction for our clients.” Apprenticeship program initiatives have always been a major interest to SML, with its founders serving on these boards to ensure quality tradesmen for the industry. The company’s certified tradesmen work closely mentoring newly registered apprentices, ensuring they receive the required skills and training of the trade, resulting in the preservation of quality and safe work. In the Beginning Fuller & Knowles opened its first office in Edmonton on Whyte Avenue in 1942 as a plumbing and heating service company. As the community started to grow, so did the company, and it quickly grew from a service company to one of western Canada’s largest mechanical contractors. Over the years, offices were centralized in Leduc, Alberta, with a branch in Kelowna, British Columbia. The Alberta Apprenticeship Program has had SML’s continual involvement throughout its development in Alberta, beginning with Art Fuller in the early years and establishing the Arthur C. Fuller apprenticeship award. Fuller and Knowles registered the first and second apprentice in 1948 in the Edmonton area provincial program. Aquatic Center An interesting recent project for SML is the H20 Center in Kelowna, British Columbia. “Kelowna is a resort town, the Canadian Palm Springs,” says Construction Manager Rob Feist. “It’s on a 92-mile-long lake, and it’s full of golf courses. The H20 center also has a 3-foot surfing wave, a wave pool, four water slides and a fitness center on the second floor. At the water park, they have a lazy river that you can get in an inner tube and have turbine jets move you through this course. There’s also a stage inside CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM JANUARY 2010
