Institutional | SPAWGLASS – AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUND ROCK CAMPUS Right on Trackfter nearly six decades, SpawGlass has grown to be a construction firm with the right attitude for its business, Project Manager John Anglada says. “We just want to be the best contractor at providing [service] in our market,” he says. “We work hard at making sure our clients are satisfied.” Based in Selma, Texas, the firm specializes in general contracting, construction management, design/build and civil contracting services. Founders Louis Spaw and Frank Glass started the company in 1953, with the enclosure of a porch as its first project. The company now enjoys more than $475 million in revenues annually and has assembled a portfolio that includes campus housing, civil, government, healthcare, hospitality, office, religious and senior-living projects. “While many things have changed over the past 56 years, the company’s commitment to providing the highest standards of service and quality remains the same,” the company says. In addition, SpawGlass is 100 percent employee owned, which includes Anglada himself. “There are more employees [who] own stock than don’t,” he says, noting that this has nurtured a positive attitude throughout the company. $75 million Round »ACC’scampus will consist Rock of five new buildings. SPAWGLASS IS ON SCHEDULE AS IT BUILDS ACC’S LARGEST SUBURBAN CAMPUS. BY ALAN DORICH AERIAL PROVIDED BY AERO PHOTO (WWW.AEROPHOTO.COM) Building in Round Rock SpawGlass now is bringing its talents to the $75 million Round Rock Campus project for Austin Community College (ACC) in Round Rock, Texas. “We’re taking a grain field to a finished college campus in 18 months,” Anglada says. The finished campus will consist of five new buildings. Three of the Round Rock buildings will stand three stories. One will house student services and a library, the second will be a general studies building and the third will be a health science building. SpawGlass also will build a one-story applied technology building and a central utility plant. The campus will offer courses in all subjects, but “the main focus is going to be on the health science and nursing classes,” Anglada says, noting the campus will span Reinforcing Safety 275,000 square feet and sit on a 60-acre site. “It’s probably going to be the largest suburban campus for ACC,” he says, adding that the company plans to finish the project by July 27, 2010. Classes will start the following month. SpawGlass places a strong focus on safety and has earned the status of a platinum level OSHA contractor. “All SpawGlass hourly team members are required to complete the OSHA 10-hour training course, and all project management team members are required to complete the OSHA 30-hour training course,” it says. “To further reinforce our commitment to safety, we contract with an outside safety consultant to analyze potential hazards on job sites, provide site-specific preconstruction safety hazard analyses, perform appropriate training and conduct frequent OSHAlevel inspections,” it says, adding that it also provides financial incentives for zero recordable incidents. Keeping Up the Pace SpawGlass is nearly 50 percent complete on the Round Rock project. Anglada notes that he is pleased with the way the company has stayed on schedule. SpawGlass started building in March 2009, but “we didn’t get full construction documents until June of this year,” he recalls. “Through all that accelerated construction, we’re still on time and we’re still on budget.” CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM JANUARY 2010
