You have to find simple, elegant solutions that allow you to achieve your goals.” Soueid, a principal/senior vice president of HDR CUH2A – a division of HDR Architecture Inc., Omaha, Neb. – is speaking about the National Synchrotron Light Source–II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, N.Y., on Long Island. As global director of advanced research, Soueid supervised the architectural and engineering design of the NSLS-II. BNL is building the 400,000square-foot NSLS-II to generate X-rays for user research. Five laboratory/office buildings are designed to be connected to the ring building structure and will increase the overall size of the project to approximately 570,000 square feet. Thousands of researchers from around the world in biology, medicine, chemistry, environmental sciences, physics and materials science are expected to use the facility eventually. The new NSLS-II will produce X-rays more than 10,000 times brighter than the current NSLS, which has been operating for more than 20 years. NSLS-II will include advanced instruments, optics and detectors to provide the finest spatial and energy resolution of any JANUARY 2010 CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM http://www.CONSTRUCTION-TODAY.COM
